The Federal Government of Nigeria has extended warm congratulations to the Government and people of Ethiopia on the occasion of its National Day, celebrated annually on May 28.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja, and signed by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Nigeria described the day as a historic milestone that reflected Ethiopia’s enduring sovereignty, resilience, and commitment to unity and progress as Africa’s oldest independent nation.
The statement highlighted Ethiopia’s strategic contributions to African unity, noting its role as host of the African Union Headquarters and its continued leadership in promoting dialogue, regional peace, multilateral diplomacy, and continental integration. It also emphasized the longstanding diplomatic relationship between Nigeria and Ethiopia, describing both countries as key continental partners and founding members of several African institutions.
According to the Ministry, both nations share a “unique bond of friendship and solidarity” built on a common vision for a peaceful and prosperous Africa. Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening economic and diplomatic cooperation, particularly under the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
The statement further commended ongoing private sector collaboration, especially the investments of Dangote Industries in Ethiopia’s cement and fertilizer sectors, describing them as transformative for bilateral economic relations. It added that both countries are working toward expanding partnerships in other strategic sectors for mutual benefit.
Nigeria also expressed support for Ethiopia’s domestic reforms and its stabilizing role in the Horn of Africa, expressing confidence that both nations will continue to deepen trade, investment, and development cooperation in the years ahead.
The Federal Government reiterated its solidarity with Ethiopia and wished the country continued peace, progress, and prosperity.
