The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Beijing, China, has hosted a special reception in honour of the Nigerian football team that emerged champions at the just-concluded Flames Beijing World Cup, in a celebration that highlighted the growing impact of sports diplomacy in advancing Nigeria’s image abroad.
The event was attended by a representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, alongside embassy officials, members of the Nigerian student community, supporters, and players who represented Nigeria at the amateur international tournament featuring participants largely from the African diaspora and other international communities in China.
Embassy officials described the reception as an opportunity to celebrate the team’s patriotism, discipline, resilience, and excellence, noting that their victory reflected positively on Nigeria’s international reputation. They also said the gathering helped strengthen engagement between the mission and Nigerians living in China, particularly students and young professionals.
Speaking during the event, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy, Mrs. Ikerionwu Chiegonu Edith, congratulated the team for what she described as an extraordinary achievement, stressing that the victory symbolized the resilience and unity associated with the Nigerian spirit.
She noted that football remains a universal language capable of connecting people across cultures and continents, adding that the team successfully used sports to project a positive image of Nigeria globally. She also assured continued Embassy support for initiatives that promote Nigeria’s image and strengthen community relations among Nigerians in China.
The team captain, speaking on behalf of the players, expressed appreciation to the Embassy for its support and recognition, describing the victory as historic as it marked Nigeria’s first participation and triumph in the tournament.
He added that the achievement would deepen cooperation between Nigerian students in China and the Embassy while encouraging stronger institutional support for sports and youth development initiatives within the diaspora community.
The team coach also acknowledged the contributions of Embassy officials, supporters, assistant coaches, medical volunteers, and members of the Nigerian community in Beijing. He admitted there were some organizational shortcomings during the tournament’s opening ceremony but accepted responsibility and pledged improved coordination in future competitions.
Embassy officials further urged Nigerians in China to maintain regular communication with the mission, particularly on immigration and passport matters, warning that many consular challenges arise from delays in document renewal or failure to seek timely guidance.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs representative, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, also commended the Embassy for promoting citizen engagement and celebrating Nigerian excellence abroad, while presenting one of his authored books as part of efforts to promote intellectual and cultural diplomacy among Nigerians overseas.
The Ministry stated that the event reflects Nigeria’s commitment to leveraging sports diplomacy, youth engagement, and cultural interaction to strengthen bilateral relations and project a positive national image internationally.
