The Nigeria Police Force has joined the global community to commemorate the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, paying tribute to peacekeepers worldwide for their courage, professionalism, sacrifice, and commitment to promoting peace and security.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, honoured peacekeepers who lost their lives in the line of duty under the United Nations flag, describing their sacrifices as a source of inspiration in the continuous pursuit of a safer and more peaceful world.
The IGP highlighted Nigeria’s longstanding role in international peace support operations, noting that officers of the Nigeria Police Force have continued to serve with distinction in United Nations, African Union, and other regional peacekeeping missions.
He said Nigerian police peacekeepers have demonstrated professionalism, expertise, and dedication in conflict-affected communities across the world, strengthening Nigeria’s reputation as a responsible contributor to global peace and security.
Speaking on this year’s theme, “Invest in Peace,” Disu stressed the importance of sustained investment in peacebuilding, capacity development, strong institutions, technology, and international cooperation to address emerging security threats.
He identified challenges such as terrorism, transnational organised crime, cyber-enabled offences, communal conflicts, and violent extremism as threats requiring innovative and collaborative approaches.
The police chief also emphasised the need to equip peacekeepers with modern skills, training, technology, and operational resources, while acknowledging the contributions of female peacekeepers and advocating increased participation and leadership opportunities for women in peace operations.
While appreciating the sacrifices of peacekeepers and their families, the IGP reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to strengthening its peacekeeping capacity and supporting initiatives that promote international peace, security, and stability.
The Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, said the Nigeria Police Force remain committed to professionalism, capacity development, and global partnerships in support of sustainable peace worldwide.
