The Federal Government of Nigeria has summoned the Acting High Commissioner of the Republic of South Africa following rising tensions linked to recent protests against foreign nationals in the country.
In a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday, the meeting is scheduled to take place on Monday, May 4, 2026, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja. The engagement is aimed at addressing Nigeria’s concerns over developments that could strain the long-standing diplomatic relations between both countries.
According to the statement signed by the Ministry’s Spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, discussions will focus on the ongoing demonstrations in South Africa, particularly incidents involving the alleged mistreatment of Nigerian citizens and attacks on their businesses.
The Ministry noted that the situation has generated growing concern among Nigerians, especially those with relatives and investments in South Africa. It, however, urged citizens to remain calm while diplomatic channels are being explored to resolve the issues.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the rights, dignity, and welfare of Nigerians living abroad, emphasizing that appropriate steps are being taken to engage South African authorities on the matter.
Nigeria and South Africa maintain strategic bilateral relations, with strong ties in trade, diplomacy, and regional cooperation. However, periodic tensions have arisen in the past over the treatment of foreign nationals, including Nigerians, in South Africa.
