The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced the successful enrolment and issuance of National Identification Numbers (NINs) to 59,786 inmates across various correctional centres in Nigeria, as part of its inclusive identity registration campaign.
The milestone was achieved in collaboration with the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) and aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasized digital inclusion and access to national identity for all Nigerians and legal residents.
According to the Commission, 74 percent of inmates nationwide have now been enrolled into the National Identity Database, while efforts continue to register the remaining eligible individuals in custody.
The Commission acknowledged the critical support of the Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Comptroller-General of the NCoS, Mr. Nwakuche Ndidi, and the NCoS management and personnel for their contributions to the success of the exercise.
As part of its next phase, NIMC is set to roll out ward-level enrolment across the country a move expected to deepen penetration of the National Identity Number and ensure that no one is left behind, especially in remote and underserved communities.
Speaking on the initiative, the Director General/Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Engr. (Dr.) Abisoye Coker-Odusote, stated that the Commission is committed to partnering with strategic stakeholders to deliver on the mandate of comprehensive NIN coverage.
“Our goal is to enrol all Nigerians and legal residents in every ward across the country. This is a key step toward an inclusive and efficient national identity system,” Dr. Coker-Odusote said.
The ward-level registration is anticipated to begin in the coming weeks as part of a broader nationwide mobilisation strategy.
