The Nigeria Immigration Service has warned Nigerians against falling victim to fraudulent migration schemes and human trafficking, raising concerns over the growing activities of criminal networks involved in irregular cross-border movements across the country.
The warning was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Service Public Relations Officer, DCI AS Akinlabi, who said vulnerable persons, particularly young women and girls, are increasingly being targeted through fake promises of employment, education, sponsorship, and better opportunities abroad.
Akinlabi noted that many victims of such deceptive schemes often end up subjected to forced labour, human trafficking, sexual exploitation, and other forms of abuse.
According to the Service, it is illegal for any Nigerian to leave the country without a valid passport, visa, and other necessary travel documents, warning that irregular migration exposes individuals to serious risks and dangers.
The agency further stressed that no genuine travel process bypasses official immigration procedures or authorized border posts, urged Nigerians to be cautious of unsolicited offers of sponsorship, travel assistance, or overseas opportunities from unknown or unverified persons.
The NIS advised members of the public to verify the authenticity of all travel and recruitment offers through appropriate government channels and avoid dealing with agents or individuals promoting irregular migration.
It also called on citizens to report suspicious activities, movements, or persons involved in such schemes to the nearest Immigration formation or other relevant security agencies.
The Service urged parents, guardians, and community leaders to educate young people on the dangers associated with irregular migration and trafficking in persons.
Reaffirming its commitment to national security and citizen protection, the NIS said it remained resolute in securing Nigeria’s borders and preventing the exploitation of Nigerians by criminal syndicates.
