Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, has been honoured with the Humanitarian Award for Excellence in Service in recognition of her outstanding contributions to society and commitment to humanitarian causes.
The award was presented during the 10th anniversary celebration of the Women of Glory Foundation held in Abuja on Saturday, June 6, 2026.
At the event, the Foundation described Grace Ike as the “Most Active Journalistic Mobilizer,” acknowledging her leadership role in promoting journalism, national development, and social impact initiatives.
The Women of Glory Foundation, a humanitarian organisation dedicated to supporting widows, elderly women, single mothers and other vulnerable groups, marked a decade of service with the anniversary celebration. Through empowerment programmes, mentorship, skills acquisition, healthcare support and faith-based guidance, the foundation has continued to uplift women across Nigeria.
Speaking at the event, the Founder of the Foundation, Dr. Nneka Evelyn Nzewi, recounted the personal experiences that inspired the establishment of the organisation.
She explained that the foundation was born out of childhood struggles following the death of her father, which left her mother to single-handedly raise five children under difficult circumstances.
“At a very young age, I lost my father. My mother was suddenly left to raise five children with no support system. I watched her fight every day to survive, to provide and to keep hope alive despite enormous challenges,” she said.
Dr. Nzewi noted that her mother’s resilience and the hardships the family endured inspired her commitment to helping women facing similar situations.
According to her, the foundation has expanded its reach across the 36 states of the federation, carrying out humanitarian services and creating awareness on issues relating to national development, violence against women and children, health, economic empowerment and environmental sustainability.
Represented at the event by the Assistant Secretary of the NUJ FCT Council, Sharon Emephia, Grace Ike received the award amid commendations from the organisers, who praised her exceptional leadership in mobilising journalists towards promoting national interest and societal development.
Speaking on behalf of the NUJ FCT Chairman, Emephia congratulated the Women of Glory Foundation on its decade of impactful service.
“Ten years of sustained impact is no small achievement. It reflects resilience, vision and a deep commitment to service. In a time when many initiatives struggle for continuity, your decade-long journey stands as a testament to purpose-driven leadership,” she said.
She also conveyed Grace Ike’s appreciation to the organisers for the recognition.
“I sincerely appreciate the organisers for this honour. I receive it with gratitude and humility, and I see it not just as a personal recognition but as a reflection of the collective efforts of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, FCT Council, and the values we uphold in promoting truth, development and societal progress,” the statement read.
The organisers, in their remarks, expressed gratitude to supporters and partners who have contributed to the foundation’s humanitarian efforts over the last ten years, while calling on more individuals and organisations to join in advancing its mission of transforming lives and empowering vulnerable women across Nigeria.
The anniversary celebration attracted women from diverse professional and social backgrounds, many of whom have distinguished themselves in various fields of endeavour and community service.
