Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has said that Nigeria’s democratic institutions have continued to grow stronger despite the economic, security and political challenges that have confronted the country over the last 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.
Kalu made the assertion on Saturday in Abuja during the 27th Democracy Day Inter-Denominational Church Service, where he reflected on Nigeria’s democratic journey since 1999 and urged citizens to remain hopeful and committed to nation-building.
According to the Deputy Speaker, the endurance of democracy in Nigeria is a testament to the resilience of Nigerians who have continued to overcome difficult periods marked by economic pressures, security concerns, social tensions and political contests.
He noted that Nigeria remained one of Africa’s largest and most influential democracies, adding that democratic institutions have become stronger, electoral processes continue to evolve, and citizens are increasingly participating in governance and holding leaders accountable.
Kalu, however, stressed that democracy should not be measured solely by the conduct of elections but by its ability to improve the lives of citizens, create opportunities, protect freedoms and strengthen national unity.
The Deputy Speaker also commended the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as bold reforms aimed at strengthening democratic governance and repositioning the economy through the Renewed Hope Agenda.
He highlighted key achievements of the administration, including efforts to stabilise the economy, improve public finances, expand infrastructure, attract foreign investment, implement tax reforms, increase domestic revenue, support local government autonomy and drive major infrastructure projects across the country.
Kalu further pointed to investments in education through the Student Loan Scheme, social intervention programmes, food security initiatives and reforms in the oil and gas sector as evidence of the government’s commitment to national development.
While acknowledging that reforms often require difficult decisions and patience, he said lasting national transformation can only be achieved through courage, vision and collective sacrifice for the greater good.
The Deputy Speaker offered prayers for President Tinubu, asking God to grant him wisdom, strength, good health and discernment as he continues to steer the affairs of the nation.
Reaffirming the commitment of the National Assembly to deepening democracy, Kalu said lawmakers remain focused on enacting legislation that promotes economic growth, social justice, security, education, innovation and sustainable national development.
He added that the House of Representatives would continue to work closely with all arms and levels of government to advance inclusive prosperity, social stability and national progress.
Calling on Nigerians to reject hopelessness and cynicism, Kalu urges citizens to embrace peace, tolerance, unity and mutual respect, noting that faith teaches perseverance, compassion and humility in leadership.
He also called for prayers for public office holders, members of the armed forces, security agencies, youths and women, whose contributions he said remain vital to the country’s democratic growth and development.
“As we celebrate 27 years of democratic governance, I encourage us to renew our covenant with our nation and recommit ourselves to building a Nigeria where opportunities abound, institutions function effectively, and every citizen can realise their God-given potential,” Kalu said.
