The Edo State Government has responded strongly to what it described as a “desperate and inaccurate” statement by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, following Governor Monday Okpebholo’s open expression of support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, the government dismissed claims that Governor Okpebholo violated Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act by allegedly engaging in early campaigning.
The government said the Governor’s remarks were made in the context of building stronger collaboration with the Federal Government to drive development in Edo State, not as a violation of electoral law.
“Governor Okpebholo, like every well-meaning Nigerian, reserves the right to express his support for the President’s vision and administration,” the statement read.
Itua described the PDP’s reaction as “the last kick of a dying horse,” accusing the party of twisting the Governor’s words in a bid to remain relevant in the state’s political landscape.
He added that the people of Edo State are already witnessing what he called “a breath of fresh air” in governance under Governor Okpebholo and are not swayed by what he termed PDP’s “baseless rhetoric.”
The statement further emphasized the Governor’s commitment to restoring public confidence in governance and steering Edo State back on the path of peace, prosperity, and development.
