President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has joined millions of Nigerians in mourning the death of former Super Eagles goalkeeper and national football legend, Peter Rufai, who passed away at the age of 61.
In a statement issued on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, Senator Akpabio described Rufai as a symbol of national pride and one of the finest goalkeepers in Nigeria’s football history.
“Peter Rufai’s contributions to Nigerian football are unforgettable. I recall his electrifying performances for Stationery Stores FC in Lagos and his exceptional career at the international level, where he played for top European clubs and earned the nickname ‘Dodo Mayana’,” Akpabio stated.
He particularly praised Rufai’s heroic displays during the Tunisia ’94 Africa Cup of Nations and the USA ’94 FIFA World Cup, noting that his legacy in Nigerian football remains indelible.
“Rufai was simply unbeatable at his peak. His exploits standing between the goalposts brought honour to Nigeria, and his legacy continues to inspire young athletes,” the Senate President added.
Akpabio extended his heartfelt condolences to the Rufai family, the Nigerian sporting community, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), and the government and people of Lagos State.
“On behalf of my family, constituents, and the 10th National Assembly, I pray for the peaceful repose of his soul and comfort for all those he left behind,” he said.
Peter Rufai, fondly called “Dodo Mayana,” made over 60 appearances for the Super Eagles and remains a celebrated figure in Nigerian sports.
