The Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his efforts on the tax reform bills currently undergoing legislative scrutiny at the National Assembly. The Conference emphasized that the proposed reforms, if passed, would strengthen fiscal federalism by granting states greater financial autonomy through improved tax collection and administration.
In a communique issued at the end of its meeting held on February 13, 2025, in Abuja, and signed by its Director-General, Busari Sarafadeen, on behalf of Chairman Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, the Conference reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening democracy, promoting legislative independence, and ensuring good governance across Nigeria.
The Speakers also stressed the need for strict adherence to constitutional provisions in the removal of presiding officers of state Houses of Assembly. While addressing the leadership change in the Lagos State House of Assembly, the Conference urged stakeholders to respect legislative independence and follow due process in any leadership changes to maintain peace and stability in the state.
On the ongoing political crisis in the Rivers State House of Assembly, the Conference referenced court judgments affirming the legitimacy of the Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule-led Assembly. It called on the Executive Governor of Rivers State, Dr. Siminalayi Fubara, and other stakeholders to engage with the duly constituted Assembly to ensure stability and progress in the state.
The Speakers emphasized that respect for judicial decisions and institutional harmony is crucial for effective governance.
Reiterating its stance on tax reform, the Conference acknowledged citizens’ concerns and urged lawmakers to consider public interests in shaping the final legislation. It highlighted that improved tax administration would enable states to fund critical infrastructure and public services necessary for sustainable development.
The Conference concluded by reaffirming its dedication to upholding democratic principles, legislative autonomy, and good governance across the country.
