The United Kingdom Home Office International Operations has reiterated its commitment to strengthening its partnership with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) in the fight against human trafficking in Nigeria.
This assurance was given on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, during the official handover of the refurbished NAPTIP Lagos Command Office and Detention Centre, which was upgraded with support from the UK Home Office International Operations.
Speaking at the event, NAPTIP Director General, Binta Adamu Bello, described the UK as a key ally in tackling human trafficking and enhancing access to justice. Represented by the Director of Research and Programme Development, Mr. Josiah Emerole, she expressed appreciation for the UK government’s investment in improving the Lagos Command’s infrastructure and ensuring that the detention facility meets international standards.
The Head of UK Home Office International Operations for Africa, Mr. Richard Lloyd, emphasized the importance of NAPTIP’s work, stated that preventing even one person from being trafficked is a significant achievement. He noted that the detention centre upgrade aligned with global human rights compliance standards, ensuring better conditions for victims and suspects.
In her remarks, the Zonal Commander of NAPTIP Lagos Command, Mrs. Comfort Agboko, described the refurbishment as a “rebirth” for the office. She expressed confidence that the improved facilities would enhance the quality of services provided to rescued victims and individuals in the agency’s custody.
The event further strengthened the ongoing collaboration between Nigeria and the United Kingdom in combating human trafficking and ensuring justice for victims.
