The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has reaffirmed the critical role of a free, independent, and responsible press in promoting democracy, human rights, and national development, as the world marks World Press Freedom Day 2026.
In a statement issued on Sunday, May 3, and signed by its National President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, the union said this year’s theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security,” resonates strongly with Nigeria’s current realities.
The NUJ expressed cautious optimism over what it described as a noticeable improvement in relations between the Department of State Services (DSS) and the media, noting a decline in cases of intimidation, harassment, and arbitrary arrests of journalists.
The union commended the leadership of the DSS, particularly the Director-General, for encouraging a more professional and constructive engagement with the press, adding that such cooperation is vital in fostering a peaceful and secure society.
While acknowledging the progress, the NUJ stressed the need to sustain and deepen these gains through continuous dialogue, transparency, and strict adherence to the rule of law, emphasizing that press freedom remains a constitutional right.
The body also called on the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to emulate the DSS by respecting journalists’ rights and ensuring a conducive environment for media practice without fear or intimidation.
Reiterating its commitment to responsible journalism, the NUJ urged media practitioners to uphold the highest ethical standards, anchored on accuracy, fairness, and accountability to the public.
The union maintained that the media and security institutions should be seen as partners rather than adversaries in the collective effort to promote peace, protect human rights, and drive national development.
It further called on all stakeholders, including government, security agencies, the media, and citizens, to renew their commitment to safeguarding press freedom as a cornerstone of a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria.
