The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has condemned an alleged accidental airstrike on a market at the Borno–Yobe border that reportedly left dozens dead on Sunday, April 12, 2026.
In a press statement issued the same day, MURIC said more than 56 people were confirmed killed in the incident, though conflicting reports suggest the death toll could be significantly higher. While some local media estimates place casualties between 50 and 56, international reports have indicated that as many as 200 people may have died.
The group described the bombing as “one accidental bombing too many,” questioning the operational procedures of the Nigerian Air Force and raising concerns over intelligence failures.
MURIC’s Executive Director, Ishaq Akintola, criticized the incident as a grave act of negligence. He queried how a civilian market could be mistaken for a terrorist target and demanded clarity on who authorized and executed the strike.
“This is the height of ineptitude. How many times will innocent civilians be killed under such circumstances? Was there any credible intelligence before this operation?” the statement read.
The organization called for the immediate suspension of all personnel involved in the operation including the pilot, co-pilot, and senior officers who approved the mission pending the outcome of a comprehensive investigation.
MURIC also urged the National Assembly of Nigeria to initiate an independent probe into the incident, stressed that the investigation should not be left solely in the hands of the Air Force.
“This must not go without a thorough and transparent investigation. We demand accountability,” the group stated.
