The All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused former Vice President and 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, of being the architect of his party’s current disintegration, dismissing his claims of interference by the ruling party.
In a press statement signed by APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the party described Atiku’s allegations of APC paying opposition leaders ₦50 million each to destabilize their parties as “bogus and laughable.” The APC also criticized Atiku’s remarks during the National Conference on Strengthening Democracy in Nigeria, held in Abuja on January 27, 2025, where he claimed that judicial involvement in electoral matters threatened democracy.
“It is ironic for Atiku, Nigeria’s most prolific electoral litigator, to suggest that judicial oversight in elections endangers democracy,” the statement said, added that the courts remained a constitutional branch empowered to adjudicate electoral disputes.
The APC further recalled alleged election irregularities during Atiku’s tenure as Vice President, citing the controversial 2003 and 2007 elections, during which the PDP reportedly manipulated the democratic process.
“Atiku’s political desperation is responsible for the PDP’s catastrophic disintegration. Instead of spreading unsubstantiated rumors, he should focus on rebuilding his party and offering solutions to Nigeria’s challenges,” the statement read.
The APC also dismissed claims by opposition leaders, including Atiku, Peter Obi, and former Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, that the ruling party was complicit in weakening opposition parties.
“As discerning citizens, Nigerians know better than to be distracted by false alarms and hollow allegations of desperate politicians,” Morka said.
The APC emphasized the need for all political actors to prioritize the country’s development over personal ambitions as preparations for the 2027 general elections intensify.
