The Headquarters Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) has dismissed as false and misleading reports circulating on some television stations and social media platforms regarding the recent terrorist attack on troops’ position in Benisheikh, Borno State.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Media Information Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the military said the narratives often accompanied by unrelated photos and videos were deliberately crafted to distort facts, undermine ongoing operations, and erode public confidence in the Armed Forces.
OPHK specifically refuted claims that 17 soldiers, including a Brigade Commander, were killed in the incident. According to the military, verified information earlier released by Defence Headquarters confirmed that two officers and two soldiers lost their lives during the engagement.
“The figures being circulated are entirely false, misleading, and devoid of credibility,” the statement stressed.
The military also dismissed insinuations that the Brigade Commander’s vehicle was unserviceable during the attack. It clarified that the commander was operating from a Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle, which was only temporarily immobilised amid intense combat as he coordinated counter-operations.
“This reflects the intensity of the engagement and the presence of leadership at the decisive point, not any equipment failure,” OPHK noted.
It further stated that images and videos being shared in connection with the attack are not related to the Benisheikh incident and are being misrepresented to reinforce false narratives. The public was urged to disregard such content.
Condemning the spread of misinformation, the military warned against exploiting security incidents for propaganda or personal gain, noting that such actions undermine the sacrifices and professionalism of troops on the frontlines.
Reaffirming its operational success, OPHK stated that troops successfully repelled the attack, retained control of their location, and forced the terrorists into a disorganised retreat.
“The failed assault underscores the sustained pressure on terrorist elements and the growing combat effectiveness of troops across the theatre,” the statement added.
The military reiterated its commitment to professionalism and urged the public to rely on official channels for accurate information, cautioning against the spread of unverified reports.
