Hajiya Amina Abdullahi Abubakar mni, Director of At-Tarbiyyah STEM School , has highlighted the School’s recent International achievements in STEM and Entrepreneurship Competitions, while urging stronger National Investment in Skills-Based Education to reduce Unemployment and Insecurity among young people.
Speaking during a celebratory gathering with parents and students, Hajiya Amina said the School’s Teams had an outstanding year, competing in multiple International platforms, including a competition in Côte d’Ivoire and the SAGE (Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship) Programme.
She explained that At-Tarbiyya students emerged top performers at regional level, winning several trophies, before advancing to International stages where they secured first, second, and third positions across different categories.
In the SAGE competition held recently, she added, two student teams from the school placed first and third, earning the opportunity to represent Nigeria at upcoming Global Events in Vietnam and Cyprus respectively..
According to her, the gathering was deliberately kept informal to allow parents, students, and staff to celebrate together at National Children’s Park and Zoo in Abuja.
Beyond the awards, Hajiya Amina used the occasion to advocate for a stronger emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Education in Nigeria, describing it as key to transforming the country from an import-dependent economy into a manufacturing and innovation-driven Nation.
She expressed concern that Nigeria’s Education System has placed too much emphasis on Theory rather than hands-on Technical Skills, arguing that Practical Learning would help foster Creativity, Innovation, and Self-Reliance among young people.
“The emphasis should be on critical thinking and innovation. We need to move from an import-driven society to an inventor and manufacturing nation,” she said.
She also linked youth unemployment to rising social challenges, noting that many young people would avoid crime if they were equipped with employable skills.
On the school’s philosophy, Hajiya Amina said the institution integrates STEM Education with discipline and moral upbringing, which she referred to as Tarbiyah, alongside Islamic Education.
She commended parents for trusting the School despite its relatively new STEM-focused approach, adding that graduates from earlier sets have progressed into Universities, with many studying Engineering-related courses and some pursuing Medicine.
Hajiya Amina also praised teachers for their dedication and said their commitment was reflected in the Students’ strong Academic performance, including improved Examination results.
The Director further disclosed that the School currently offers Secondary Education, Islamic Studies, and Adult Learning Programmes for married Women, including both weekday and weekend sessions, with plans to expand into Primary Education for young Kids.
She reaffirmed the School’s commitment to Holistic Education, combining Academic Excellence, Technical Skills, and Moral Development.
