The Federal Government has commenced a three-day Master Training Workshop aimed at strengthening teacher professional development through mobile-based learning, with a target of training at least 2,000 teachers and school leaders across Nigeria while prioritising the empowerment of female educators.
The programme, organised by the Federal Ministry of Education in partnership with the Government of Japan, UNESCO-International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (UNESCO-IICBA), the Pan-African University (PAU) and Castalia Co. Ltd. under the Pan-African Virtual and Electronic University (PAVEU) Initiative, is designed to equip master trainers with digital skills to improve access to continuous professional development.
Representing the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, at the workshop, the Director of Colleges of Education, Dr. Uchenna Uba, described the initiative as a major step towards improving teacher quality, promoting digital innovation and enhancing learning outcomes in line with the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI).
He said the workshop would prepare master trainers to cascade digital learning and modern teaching methodologies to thousands of educators nationwide.
According to the ministry, participants will receive training in digital literacy, Artificial Intelligence in Education, gender-responsive pedagogy, mental health, learner-centred teaching and the use of the GOKU Mobile Learning Platform.
The Federal Government disclosed that Japan is investing approximately one million US dollars in the initiative, while development partners presented 40 tablets and two edge computing devices to support its nationwide implementation.
The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to leveraging technology and strategic partnerships to provide inclusive, equitable and quality education for every Nigerian child, noting that the initiative aligns with the government’s broader efforts to modernise the education sector through digital transformation.
