Niger State Government has placed immediate ban on street begging in the state with effect from Wednesday, 4th March 2020.
Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Alhaji Muhammad Sani Idris disclosed this on Thursday during a post-exco briefing with journalists at the government house Minna.
He said the ban became necessary in view of the security challenges in the state. He explained that the State Government will work in synergy with other states in Northern Nigeria to have a workable structure that would stand the test of time, having gotten the political will from Governor Abubakar Bello.
The Commissioner said the state government would also work with relevant agencies to ensure violators of the law are prosecuted, pointed out that adult violators will be sanctioned while the parents of a child that violated the law will be traced and prosecuted irrespective of their state of residence.
He, however, maintained that the ban was not targeted at stopping the almajiri system of education, but that it is driven by security imperatives.
He said henceforth, all almajiri schools must be licensed to operate in the state.
