A fresh wave of defections has rocked Nigeria’s House of Representatives as six lawmakers from Delta State under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have officially crossed over to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defectors included Hon. Nnamdi Ezechi, Jonathan Ukodiko, Nicholas Mutu, Thomas Ereyitomi, Julius Pondi, and Victor Nwokolo. Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, formally welcomed them into the APC fold during plenary on Tuesday, May 6, 2025.
In their letters of resignation from the PDP, the lawmakers cited internal crises and the need to align with the “progressive governance” of Delta’s current administration as primary reasons for their switch.
Hon. Ezechi, representing Ndokwa East/Ndokwa West/Ukwuani Federal Constituency, emphasized that joining the APC was a strategic move to consolidate the ongoing development efforts in the state.
Similarly, two members of the Labour Party (LP) from Enugu State—Hon. Chidi Obetta (Nsukka/Igboeze South) and Hon. Dennis Agbo (Igboeze North/Udenu) announced their defection to the PDP. Both lawmakers pointed to persistent divisions and leadership struggles within the LP as their reason for leaving.
This series of defections signaled a realignment of political forces ahead of anticipated electoral and legislative contests, and further underscored growing instability within opposition parties.
