The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has clarified concerns surrounding the identity of Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki, the terrorist commander recently neutralised during a joint counterterrorism operation conducted by the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the United States Africa Command on 16 May 2026.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the military explained that public confusion arose after some media reports referenced a similar operation in 2024 involving a terrorist commander bearing the same name.
According to the DHQ, the recurrence of identical names, aliases and nom de guerres among ISWAP and Boko Haram fighters is common across the North-East and the Lake Chad Basin region.
The military said the practice forms part of the insurgents’ indoctrination strategy aimed at concealing identities and complicating intelligence tracking efforts during counterterrorism operations.
The statement stressed that the Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki killed in the latest operation was positively identified through human intelligence and technical surveillance as a senior global operative within the Islamic State network.
It added that the terrorist commander maintained direct links to international terrorist coordination, funding and operations across the Sahel region, insisting that there was “no ambiguity” regarding his identity.
DHQ described the operation as a major milestone in ongoing counterterrorism efforts, reaffirming the commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and their international partners to dismantling terrorist networks.
The military also urged members of the public and the media to rely on verified information released through official channels to avoid confusion arising from similarities in terrorist aliases and identities.
