As Nigeria commemorate the 2025 Democracy Day, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called for renewed commitment to the protection and promotion of human rights across the country.
In a statement issued to mark the 26th anniversary of uninterrupted democratic rule, the Executive Secretary of the NHRC, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, emphasized that democracy thrives only when justice, equality, peace, and human dignity are upheld.
“As we mark 26 years of uninterrupted democracy, we reflect on our journey and reaffirm our commitment to justice, equality, peace, and human dignity,” Ojukwu stated.
He noted that the NHRC has made significant strides in deepening democracy by mobilizing voters, promoting civic participation, and monitoring elections to ensure they meet human rights standards. He highlighted the Commission’s proactive engagement with presidential and gubernatorial candidates through pre-election town hall meetings aimed at mainstreaming human rights in governance.
“This initiative underscored the Commission’s commitment to holding leaders accountable for human rights protection,We intend to continue this trend, engaging with elected officials and aspirants to prioritize human rights in their governance.”Ojukwu said.
The NHRC boss stressed the intrinsic link between human rights and democracy, noting that the protection of fundamental rights is essential for national development.
“As we celebrate our democratic achievements, we honor the heroes of democracy who have worked tirelessly towards a Nigeria where governance is accountable, rights are protected, and every citizen lives in peace and dignity,” he added.
However, Dr. Ojukwu expressed concern over the rising insecurity and economic hardship in the country, which continue to threaten the dignity and rights of many Nigerians. He urged government at all levels to prioritize the protection of human lives, ensure justice for victims, and address the root causes of violence, injustice, and poverty.
“We remain committed to promoting, protecting, and enforcing human rights across the country. We call on all Nigerians to partner with us in safeguarding the democratic ideals that bind us together. Together, we can give real meaning to democracy and ensure hope, justice, and opportunity for all,” he said.
In reflecting on the historic significance of June 12, Dr. Ojukwu called for broader recognition of all those who played vital roles in the conduct of the acclaimed June 12, 1993 presidential election.
“If the winners of the June 12 election have been recognized, both alive and posthumously, then justice demands that those who conducted the election, particularly officials of the defunct National Electoral Commission (NEC), should also be recognized and honored,” he said.
According to him, immortalizing such individuals and institutions would serve as part of the justice of June 12 and lay a stronger foundation for democracy in Nigeria.
“Justice delayed is justice denied,” he concluded.
