The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, has called on Nigerians to safeguard the country’s hard-earned democratic freedoms and support the ongoing reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu aimed at fostering national development.
In a Democracy Day message commemorating June 12, Yilwatda described the date as a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic history, symbolizing the sacrifices of patriots who fought for justice, electoral integrity, and the sovereignty of the people.
He said Democracy Day serves as a reminder of Nigeria’s collective struggle for freedom and representative governance, stressing that democracy remains the foundation for peaceful political participation, accountability, protection of rights, and inclusive nation-building.
The APC chairman urged Nigerians to reflect on the nation’s democratic progress and renew their commitment to defending democratic institutions and constitutional governance.
“Every generation has a responsibility to defend democracy. The sacrifices made by our democratic heroes should never be forgotten, nor should we allow actions capable of undermining our constitutional order,” he stated.
Yilwatda called on political leaders, civil society groups, the media, religious organizations, youth groups, and other stakeholders to promote dialogue, tolerance, respect for the rule of law, and peaceful engagement in the democratic process.
He also appealed to citizens to support President Tinubu’s economic and institutional reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that meaningful transformation often requires difficult but necessary decisions.
According to him, the reforms are designed to reposition Nigeria for sustainable growth, economic stability, infrastructure development, improved social welfare, and expanded investment opportunities.
The APC chairman maintained that ongoing reforms across critical sectors are intended to strengthen institutions, create jobs, improve the business environment, and build a more competitive and inclusive economy.
He urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and united, warning against division, violence, misinformation, and actions that could threaten democratic stability.
Yilwatda said the best way to honour the heroes of June 12 is to preserve the democracy they fought for and work collectively toward a peaceful, prosperous, and united Nigeria.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the APC to strengthening democratic governance, promoting national unity, and supporting policies that advance the country’s progress and prosperity.
