The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that its official X account has been compromised, urging members of the public to disregard suspicious, unauthorised or misleading content posted from the account.
The DHQ disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, who said the incident was being treated as a cybersecurity matter.
According to the military authorities, appropriate technical measures have been activated to secure the account and prevent further unauthorised access, while efforts are ongoing to fully restore control.
The DHQ therefore cautioned the public against relying on information or messages posted from the affected account during the period of the breach.
The statement said the Defence Headquarters remained committed to maintaining the highest standards of information security and ensuring that Nigerians continue to receive accurate, timely and credible information on the activities and operations of the Nigerian military.
The military headquarters also appealed to the public to remain vigilant and assured that further updates would be provided as efforts to regain full control of the account continue.
To ensure uninterrupted communication, the DHQ directed members of the public to rely on its active official channels on other platforms for verified information.
These include its Facebook page, Defence Headquarters Nigeria; Instagram account, @defenceheadquarters; and its official Defence Headquarters Nigeria WhatsApp Channel.
The DHQ’s warning was coming amid reports that unauthorised content had appeared on its X account following the compromise, making the military’s advisory particularly important to prevent the spread of misinformation or fraudulent messages.
The Defence Headquarters therefore reiterated its appreciation for the understanding and vigilance of members of the public as efforts continue to secure the account.
