The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who reportedly died while in captivity after being abducted by suspected terrorists.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Director Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) described the late senior officer as a dedicated patriot whose contributions to national security and military professionalism left an enduring legacy.
According to the statement, Major General Abubakar served the country with distinction in several strategic roles, including as Director Defence Information and spokesman for the Armed Forces. He was also noted for his contributions to counter-insurgency operations, military communications, and the professional development of personnel across the armed services.
The military disclosed that it deliberately refrained from making public comments on his abduction while efforts were underway to secure his release, stressing that all available operational resources were deployed in collaboration with other security agencies in a bid to rescue him alive.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria convey its deepest sympathies to the Abubakar family, his colleagues and all Nigerians. His commitment to duty and to the unity of Nigeria remains a shining example for all personnel of the AFN,” the statement said.
The Defence Headquarters noted that the tragic loss has further reinforced the determination of the military to confront terrorism, kidnapping and other security threats across the country.
It stated that ongoing military operations have been intensified following a series of abductions nationwide, including that of the late general, with the aim of bringing perpetrators to justice and dismantling terrorist networks.
Reaffirming its constitutional responsibility, the military assured Nigerians that it would remain steadfast in defending the nation’s sovereignty, protecting lives and property, and restoring lasting peace and security.
“The Armed Forces will not relent until peace and security are restored and those responsible for terrorist activities across the nation are held to account,” the statement added.
The death of Major General Abubakar has sparked fresh concerns over the growing menace of kidnapping and insecurity in parts of the country, even as security agencies continue efforts to track down those responsible for his abduction and death.
