Stakeholders from the National Assembly, security agencies, and the media have called for unity, discipline, and responsible journalism as key drivers in advancing Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agenda under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The call was made during the 2025 Easter Cantata Concert organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, with the theme: “Renewal and Hope: Harnessing the Transformative Power of Unity and Progress.”
The event brought together lawmakers, journalists, security personnel, and civil society leaders in a celebration marked by music, prayers, and messages of national rebirth.
Chairman of the House Committee on Customs and Excise and Member representing Yagba Federal Constituency, Elder Leke Abejide, in his address, emphasized the importance of courageous and visionary leadership in navigating Nigeria’s current economic reforms.
“A leader must be willing to step on toes and make difficult decisions. Though painful at the start, the end brings sweetness,” Abejide said, referencing a Yoruba proverb. He urged citizens to support the Renewed Hope Agenda and commended the Tinubu administration’s bold steps, including the removal of fuel subsidy.
Abejide also called for a mindset shift among Nigerians, encouraging accountability, resilience, and optimism. “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams. Christ, as the cornerstone of our renewed hope, should guide us,” he added.
Also speaking, the Commissioner of Police, FCT, CP Ajao Adewale, stressed the role of the media in shaping peace and development. He charged journalists to practice responsible and developmental journalism, warning that careless reporting can incite conflict.
“One phrase can create peace or ignite crisis,” Adewale said. “Freedom of speech must be used to build, not destroy. Whether pushing the pen or pulling the trigger, our actions must promote national interest.”
He pledged continued collaboration with the media, recognizing the dangers journalists face and their role in informing and enlightening the public.
National President of the NUJ, Alhaji Alhassan Abdullahi, called on media professionals to imbibe unity, forgiveness, and national interest in their reportage. “Nigeria is our only nation. Let us use this season to pray for peace and work for national harmony,” he said.
In her welcome address, Comrade Grace Ike, Chairman of NUJ FCT Council, described Easter as a season of reflection, renewal, and unity. She said the theme of the Cantata aligns with the nation’s need for moral rebirth and collective progress.
“Journalism can transform societies by highlighting truths, promoting understanding, and advocating for justice,” she noted, urging journalists to uphold integrity and professionalism.
The Easter Cantata featured musical performances, interfaith prayers, and inspiring reflections, reinforcing the message that unity and hope remain essential to Nigeria’s growth and transformation.
