The Edo State Government has issued a stern warning to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state over what it described as repeated peddling of falsehoods and malicious attacks against Governor Monday Okpebholo and his administration.
In a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, the government described the recent comments credited to the PDP and its Publicity Secretary, Chris Osa Nehikhare, as “reckless, misleading, and baseless.”
According to the statement, the PDP’s recent remarks are “a shameful display of obsession with fabricating lies,” and a sign of a political party “struggling to remain relevant” in Edo State’s political discourse.
“It is hypocritical for the same PDP that desecrated the rule of law during its time in office to now quote the Electoral Act in a dishonest attempt to score cheap political points,” Itua said, adding that the party lacks the moral standing to preach democratic values after what he described as years of maladministration.
The Edo State Government said it will no longer tolerate what it called a “campaign of calumny,” warned that individuals involved in spreading unfounded allegations could be made to account for their statements before the appropriate legal authorities.
While reaffirming Governor Okpebholo’s commitment to peace, progress, and good governance, the statement insisted that the administration would remain focused on delivering the dividends of democracy to the people of Edo State.
“The Governor remains undistracted and is resolute in his mission to move Edo State forward,” the statement concluded.
The war of words between the APC-led government in Edo and the opposition PDP has intensified in recent weeks as the state moved closer to crucial political milestones, with both parties accusing each other of political mischief and misinformation.
