The Nigeria Police Force has condemned the fatal shooting of a suspect, Mene Ogidi, which occurred on 26th April 2026 in Effurun, Delta State, describing the incident as a violation of operational protocols and existing firearms regulations.
Preliminary investigations revealed that operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command had responded to credible intelligence from the Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway, where a suspect was reportedly apprehended by members of a transport union while attempting to waybill a parcel allegedly containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.
According to Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the situation escalated during an attempt to lawfully take the suspect into custody. It was at this point that the team leader, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman, allegedly discharged his firearm in breach of established procedures, resulting in the suspect’s death.
The Police leadership has since ordered the immediate transfer of ASP Usman and members of his team to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where they are expected to appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee for appropriate sanctions and possible prosecution.
The Inspector-General of Police extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured that justice would be pursued strictly in line with the law. He also urged members of the public to remain calm and allow due process to take its course.
Reiterating its position, the Nigeria Police Force stressed a zero-tolerance policy on extra-judicial conduct, abuse of authority, and any actions capable of eroding public confidence in law enforcement operations.
