The family of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a 29-year-old Arise TV news anchor, is calling for justice following her tragic death in an armed robbery incident at her Katampe, Abuja residence on September 29, 2025. The call was made when the Arise Media Group management paid a condolence visit to the Maduagwu family residence in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and pledged to pursue justice for Sommie’s death.
According to reports, armed robbers stormed the deceased’s apartment complex, shoot a security guard and triggered panic that led Maduagwu to attempt an escape by jumping from the third floor. She sustained severe injuries and was later rushed to Maitama General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The family expressed their grief and outrage over the incident, with Engineer Obi Maduagwu, Sommie’s paternal uncle, described her killing as “senseless, cruel, and deeply painful.” The family appreciated the solidarity shown by Arise News but demanded accountability from authorities, stating that those responsible for Sommie’s death must be brought to justice.
Sommie was a rising star in Nigerian journalism, known for her advocacy on gender-based violence and education reform. Her death has sparked widespread grief and outrage, with calls for stronger protection for journalists and urgent reforms in Nigeria’s security architecture.
