The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has dismissed as false and misleading a viral video circulating on social media that portrayed Nigeria Police personnel being addressed by Mr. Peter Obi alongside political campaign posters and captions suggesting a political endorsement.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the Command explained that the video had been deliberately altered to create a false narrative of political engagement involving officers of the Nigeria Police Force.
According to the statement, the original footage was recorded in 2024 when police personnel responded to a distress call over unrest and protests arising from a leadership dispute at the Labour Party National Headquarters in Utako, Abuja.
The Command stated that officers were deployed to restore law and order, and during the operation, Peter Obi, who was present at the scene, briefly addressed the officers while explaining the circumstances surrounding the party crisis.
The police emphasized that the interaction was purely incidental to the operation and had no political undertone or implication of endorsement as portrayed in the manipulated video.
The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, has ordered a thorough investigation into the origin of the altered video.
Reaffirming its commitment to neutrality, the Command stressed that it remains an impartial and apolitical institution dedicated to carrying out its constitutional responsibilities without partisan influence.
The FCT Police also warned against the creation, alteration, or circulation of misleading content capable of deceiving the public or undermining confidence in public institutions, urging citizens to verify information through official channels before sharing such materials.
