The Federal Government has declared Thursday, June 12, 2025, as a public holiday to mark this year’s Democracy Day.
This was announced in a statement issued on Sunday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani.
According to the statement, the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government and congratulated Nigerians on the nation’s 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.
“June 12 represents our historic journey to building a nation where truth and justice reign, peace is sustained, and our future assured,” Tunji-Ojo said.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Renewed Hope administration under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to uphold the core values of democracy, emphasizing that the will of the people remains the foundation for Nigeria’s political, economic, and social development.
Democracy Day is observed annually on June 12 in honour of the annulled 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history.
