The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has issued a stern warning to motorists and members of the public against assaulting road safety operatives, following the arrest of a suspect linked to an attack on FRSC personnel in Edo State.
The warning was coming in the wake of an incident that occurred in the early hours of Saturday, April 11, 2026, involving a patrol team from the RS5.1 Edo Sector Command. According to the Corps, the team had stopped a vehicle over a seat belt violation when the driver fled the scene while an FRSC marshal was still engaged in enforcement.
In a further escalation, the fleeing driver reportedly mobilised a group of commercial tricycle operators who launched a violent attack on the patrol team. During the assault, one marshal was pushed into a gutter and beaten, while the team leader also suffered physical attacks. The suspect escaped immediately after the incident.
However, through coordinated efforts involving the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services, the suspect was tracked down and apprehended. Authorities confirmed that the individual has confessed to the crime and expressed remorse for his actions.
Commending the swift response and professionalism of the collaborating security agencies, the FRSC reiterated its zero-tolerance policy toward any form of violence against its personnel.
“The assault of law enforcement officers is a serious criminal offence and will be met with the full weight of the law,” the Corps Marshal stated, adding that due legal process would be followed to ensure justice and serve as a deterrent to others.
The FRSC also urged members of the public to cooperate with its officers and make use of established complaint channels instead of resorting to violence.
Meanwhile, the injured marshal is reported to be in stable condition and receiving medical care.
The Corps reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring road safety across the country while working with relevant stakeholders to identify, apprehend, and prosecute individuals involved in attacks on its personnel.
