Renowned journalist and public affairs commentator, Abdullahi O. Haruna, popularly known as Haruspice, has earned a second master’s degree in Mass Communication from National Open University of Nigeria, further strengthening his academic and professional profile.
Describing the academic journey as demanding yet intellectually rewarding, Haruna said the programme surpassed his expectations, noting that the university’s structure requires rigorous engagement, disciplined scholarship and real-time commitment from students seeking excellence.
He commended National Open University of Nigeria for providing a flexible and accessible academic framework for working-class Nigerians, describing the institution as a vital bridge helping to close gaps in the country’s education sector, particularly for professionals balancing career growth with higher education.
According to him, the programme significantly deepened his theoretical and practical understanding of mass communication, equipping him with a broader and more robust perspective of the discipline.
Haruna also acknowledged the contributions of his academic mentor, Emmanuel Nathan Oguche, in shaping his scholarly journey. He further credited John Onoja Attah, whose work in the solid minerals sector inspired the focus of his research.
His thesis, Influence of Newspapers’ Framing of Security Policy on NSCDC’s Response to Illegal Mining in Nigeria, explores the relationship between media narratives and institutional responses to security challenges in the mining sector.
Widely regarded as an analytical and outspoken voice, Abdullahi O. Haruna has built a reputation for incisive commentary on national issues, often interrogating policies and political developments in ways that stimulate critical public discourse.
