The House of Representatives has announced it will hold a special valedictory session on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, to honour five late members of the 10th National Assembly who died while serving in office.
The session, slated for 11:00 a.m. at the Green Chamber of the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, is listed in the week’s Notice Paper released by Rep. Francis Waive, Chairman of the House Committee on Rules and Business.
According to a statement signed by the House Spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., the solemn sitting will feature tributes, personal reflections, ceremonial rites, and a moment of silence in line with parliamentary tradition. The families of the late lawmakers and other dignitaries are expected to attend.
The deceased lawmakers to be honoured are:
- Late Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga – Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency, Ogun State / Immediate Past Deputy Chief Whip (Passed in January 2025)
- Late Rep. Abdulkadir Jelani Danbuga – Isa/Sabon Birni Federal Constituency, Sokoto State (Passed in October 2023)
- Late Rep. Isa Dogonyaro – Garki/Babura Federal Constituency, Jigawa State (Passed in May 2024)
- Late Rep. Olaide Adewale Akinremi – Ibadan North Federal Constituency, Oyo State (Passed in July 2024)
- Late Rep. Ekene Abubakar Adams – Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency, Kaduna State (Passed in July 2024)
Tributes will be led by the Speaker and other Principal Officers of the House, followed by remarks from colleagues, party leaders, and invited guests.
“The House recognises that the passing of a sitting Member is not only a personal loss but also an institutional moment of mourning. It reminds us of the burden of leadership and the sacred trust placed in us by the Nigerian people,” the statement read.
The House noted that each of the late Members played a critical role in shaping legislative debates, sponsored bills and motions, and contributed to oversight and constituency development efforts.
As the 10th Assembly approaches its midterm in June 2025, the session offered lawmakers and Nigerians a moment to reflect on the ideals of public service and national representation.
