The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has raised alarm over the recent wave of killings in Jos, Plateau State, calling on the Federal Government to take urgent action to halt the violence and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
Reacting to the attacks, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Tony Ojukwu, strongly condemned what he described as “senseless and brutal killings” that have claimed several lives and left many others injured.
He noted that the incidents in Plateau mirror similar violent attacks recorded in Benue State, Kaduna State, and Zamfara State, where innocent citizens have also been victims of mass violence.
“We strongly condemn these senseless killings and express our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims,” Ojukwu said, stressing that the right to life must be protected at all costs.
The NHRC boss called for immediate and decisive measures to end the bloodshed, warning that continued inaction and lack of accountability risk emboldening perpetrators.
“Enough is enough. The government must act now to stop these atrocities and bring perpetrators to justice. The silence is deafening,” he stated.
Ojukwu urged security agencies to intensify operations in affected areas by deploying additional personnel to prevent further attacks and safeguard communities. He also called for thorough investigations and swift prosecution of those responsible to serve as a deterrent.
Beyond security measures, the Commission emphasized the need to support victims and survivors through adequate medical care, protection, and compensation.
While commending the efforts of the Plateau State Government so far, the NHRC maintained that more must be done to address the root causes of recurring violence, including poverty, inequality, and the spread of hate speech.
Reaffirming its commitment, the Commission pledged to continue advocating for the protection of human rights across the country.
“The right to life is non-negotiable. We demand justice for the victims and their families. No more bloodshed in this country,” Ojukwu declared.
