Flamingos has defeated Germany 3-2 on penalties to win Nigeria’s first-ever trophy at the Under-17 Women’s World Cup.
The team’s coach, Olowookere, and his wards went into this match against Germany as wounded lions having lost their semifinal game against Colombia in a painful situation.
Flamingos had the chance to beat Colombia in the penalties, but Edafe missed the decisive chance before the Americans won 6-5.
Before facing Germany, NFF President, Ibrahim Gusau, boosted the morale of the players as he backed them to make themselves proud.
Aminat Bello scored the second goal for the Flamingos in the 48th minute before Etim got the third goal in the 63rd minute.
Germany pulled one back in the 73rd minute through Jella Veit with Paulina adding the second before Loreen Bender restored parity at the death to take the game into penalties. And in the penalties, Nigeria won 3-2 to pick the bronze medal.
Recall, Nigeria and Germany squared off in the two teams’ first match of the competition at the same venue with the latter coming out tops.
The Germans had to battle back from behind to win 2-1 following Miracle Usani’s opener for the Flamingos through a free-kick.
