The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has commended Nigerian sprint sensation Ajayi Kayinsola and British-Nigerian basketball star OG Anunoby for their remarkable achievements on the global sporting stage.
In a statement issued in Abuja on June 15, 2026, Dabiri-Erewa described both athletes as shining examples of Nigerian excellence, resilience, and global impact.
She praised Ajayi, an athlete from Ikorodu, Lagos State, for his rapid rise in world athletics, highlighting his historic qualification for the 100m final at the 2025 World Athletics Championships the first by a Nigerian in 18 years.
According to her, Ajayi’s 2026 season has been exceptional, featuring a series of record-breaking performances. These include a 60m national record of 6.45 seconds at the SEC Indoor Championships, a 9.84-second 100m run that set a new Nigerian record, and a wind-assisted 9.72 seconds at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, described as the fastest all-conditions time by an African athlete.
She noted that his achievements underscore Nigeria’s growing reputation in global athletics and the importance of sustained investment in youth and sports development.
Dabiri-Erewa also celebrated OG Anunoby for his decisive performance in the NBA Finals, where he scored a crucial tip-in with 1.2 seconds remaining to secure a dramatic comeback victory for the New York Knicks in Game 4.
She said the moment, which helped overturn a 29-point deficit, reflects the resilience and excellence associated with Nigerians in the diaspora.
“His outstanding performance on one of basketball’s biggest stages reflects the immense potential of Nigerians and those of Nigerian heritage who continue to excel globally,” she stated.
Anunoby, who was born in London to Nigerian parents of Igbo descent, described the game as a historic moment for basketball in the United Kingdom, calling it “amazing for Britain and the UK.”
NiDCOM reaffirmed its commitment to celebrating Nigerians abroad who continue to distinguish themselves across various fields, noting that their successes enhance Nigeria’s global image.
Dabiri-Erewa wished both athletes continued success in their careers and urged stakeholders to further support emerging talents representing Nigeria internationally.
