The Nigerian Senate has suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months following allegations of misconduct and violation of parliamentary rules.
The decision was reached on Thursday, March 6, 2025, after the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions presented its findings.
The suspension came after a heated confrontation in the Senate chamber where Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan protested the reassignment of her seat by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
During the session, Akpoti-Uduaghan raised her voice, demanding an explanation for the removal of her nameplate and seat reassignment. The Senate President referred the matter to the Ethics Committee, which recommended her suspension.
Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro, pleaded for a reduction of the initial six-month suspension, which does not scale through.
The suspension included the withdrawal of Akpoti-Uduaghan’s salary, security details, and access to the National Assembly premises. Her office will remain locked, and her legislative aides will not receive their salaries during this period.
To appeal the suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan must submit a written apology to the Senate.
The development has sparked reactions from various quarters, with some viewing it as a necessary disciplinary measure, while others see it as a move to silence dissenting voices within the legislative chamber.
