Tragedy struck again on the Nyanya-Mararaba Road on Monday evening as a trailer collided with a vehicle transporting sachet water near Karu Bridge in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), leaving several motorists feared dead.
The collision, described by eyewitnesses as severe, caused a major traffic gridlock along the busy corridor, while emergency responders worked frantically to rescue survivors and clear the wreckage.
This latest incident occurred barely 24 hours after a separate crash in the same vicinity on Sunday evening involving at least seven vehicles. That earlier accident resulted in multiple casualties and left several vehicles mangled beyond repair.
The Karu Bridge section of the Nyanya-Mararaba Road has become a recurring site of fatal accidents, sparking concerns among residents and commuters who are calling for urgent government intervention.
According to reports, at least two other deadly crashes were recorded near the same spot in the past month alone.
Former Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council, Emmanuel Ogbeche, who witnessed Sunday’s accident, shared a harrowing account of the scene in a Facebook post:
“Often than not, we underestimate our going out and coming in. Just about an hour ago, some people met their end in-bound Karu Site. A terrible accident involving about seven cars, some beyond repairs, in a crash with a low-bed or caterpillar.”
The Nyanya-Mararaba Road is a critical link between Abuja city centre and the densely populated suburbs in Nasarawa State. Due to daily heavy traffic, reckless driving, and weak enforcement of traffic regulations, the area has earned a reputation as one of the region’s deadliest corridors.
As authorities are yet to issue a formal statement on the recent crashes, public calls are growing louder for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and relevant agencies to implement stricter enforcement of traffic laws, improve road infrastructure, and ensure routine maintenance of commercial vehicles.
Commuters are advised to exercise heightened caution and consider alternative routes as emergency operations continue on the affected stretch of road.
