The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS), in collaboration with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), has launched the National Identity Number (NIN)-enabled farmer registry and Government 2 People (G2P) card project. This initiative is designed to address challenges in identity verification and beneficiary authentication, enhancing the delivery of government services.
In a joint statement signed by Dr. Joel Oruche, Director of Information, FMAFS, and Dr. Kayode Adegoke, Head of Corporate Communications, NIMC, both institutions expressed their gratitude to the press for their continued support and outlined their commitment to ensuring the project’s success for the benefit of all Nigerians and residents.
The farmer registry will link farmers’ NIN and biometric data to their farmland and agricultural activities, ensuring that government aid is accurately targeted.
The G2P card, featuring biometric verification and multiple wallets, will facilitate services such as farmer financing, input distribution, and agency banking, even in remote areas without internet connectivity. Each card will be unique to its holder, providing secure and personalized access to government programmes.
With the adoption of this technology, FMAFS aimed to reduce fraud, improve service delivery, and enhance visibility in the agricultural value chain, enabling the scaling of agricultural services and interventions. NIMC will provide the foundational identity system to ensure benefits are securely linked to the rightful beneficiaries. The G2P cards will store critical data, including identity and biometric information, allowing for seamless access to multiple government programmes.
