The Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC) has condemned the brutal lynching of Ummulkhairi, a Muslim woman and mother of four, in Maraban Jos, Kaduna State, describing the incident as a grave miscarriage of justice and a dangerous sign of growing mob rule in the country.
In a statement issued by its Executive Chairman, Disu Kamor, the organisation expressed outrage over the killing of Ummulkhairi, who was reportedly accused of child kidnapping before being attacked and murdered by a mob. MPAC said the victim, a teacher, wife and mother, was denied due process and unlawfully killed based on unverified allegations.
The group stressed that no accusation, regardless of its nature, could justify extrajudicial punishment, warning that allowing suspicion to replace lawful judicial processes threatens the foundations of justice and public order.
MPAC also raised concerns over conflicting accounts regarding the role of security personnel in the events leading to the woman’s death. While official accounts have denied wrongdoing, the organisation noted that public narratives surrounding the incident have generated serious questions about how Ummulkhairi was removed from lawful custody and subsequently lynched.
Consequently, the organisation called for an independent and transparent investigation into the conduct of all security agencies and community actors involved in the incident, including a detailed examination of the chain of custody that preceded her death.
According to MPAC, the killing reflects a broader pattern of mob violence fuelled by rumours, misinformation and weak institutional responses. The group warned that the growing tendency to resort to instant punishment rather than lawful procedures poses a serious threat to national stability.
Among its demands, MPAC called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of all individuals connected to the lynching, a thorough investigation into the actions and omissions of law enforcement officers on duty, and the public release of investigative findings.
The organisation also urged authorities to provide protection, welfare support and restitution to Ummulkhairi’s family, particularly her four children, while calling for urgent measures to tackle mob justice, misinformation-driven violence and unlawful detention practices across the country.
MPAC warned that failure to ensure accountability in the case could deepen public distrust and encourage further acts of lawlessness, insisting that justice for Ummulkhairi must be “decisive, visible and uncompromising.”
