The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called on the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to urgently grant former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai access to medical attention, citing concerns over his reported health condition while in custody.
In a statement issued on Thursday, 11 June 2026, the group’s Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, said the appeal followed reports from the former governor’s media aide alleging a deterioration in his health, particularly an eye condition said to be worsening during detention.
According to the statement, MURIC expressed concern over claims that El-Rufai’s eyes were swollen, reddish, and itchy, and further alleged that he had been denied adequate access to medical treatment while in the custody of the ICPC.
The group stressed that while it supports the rule of law and ongoing investigations, the rights of detainees must be respected at all times. It urged authorities to adhere to constitutional provisions and international human rights standards guaranteeing the dignity and medical care of persons in custody.
MURIC referenced constitutional safeguards under Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, insisting that denial of medical care to any detainee constitutes a violation of fundamental human rights.
The organisation therefore called for the immediate provision of medical attention to El-Rufai, urging the ICPC to ensure humane treatment consistent with legal and ethical standards during detention.
