The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has officially established its first permanent presence in Abia State following the handover of newly constructed office and residential facilities, alongside 120 hectares of land, by the Abia State Government.
The development mark a major milestone in strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture and enhancing military operations in the South-East.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, described the event as historic and applauded Governor Alex Otti for his visionary leadership and commitment to prioritising security as the foundation for sustainable development.
The ceremony was attended by the Honourable Minister of Defence, Christopher Gwabin Musa, former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General OA Ihejirika (Rtd), and other top government and military officials.
The facilities handed over include a modern office complex, multiple residential accommodation blocks and the Certificate of Occupancy for 120 hectares of land located at Nsulu.
Air Marshal Aneke described the investment as a strategic contribution to Nigeria’s security architecture, noting that it would significantly boost the NAF’s operational capability in the South-East while opening up opportunities for socio-economic development in the state.
He disclosed that the expansive land offers the potential for specialised military training and revealed that the Air Force would explore establishing a military training institution in Abia State, subject to the necessary approvals.
Governor Alex Otti reiterated that security remains critical to attracting investment, driving economic growth and improving the welfare of citizens. He expressed confidence that the permanent presence of the Air Force would further strengthen peace, stability and public confidence across the state.
The Chief of the Air Staff also commended the initiative as a shining example of effective civil-military collaboration, assuring the Abia State Government and residents that the Nigerian Air Force would justify the confidence reposed in it through professionalism, disciplined service and responsible stewardship.
The establishment of the NAF’s permanent presence in Abia is expected to improve operational response to emerging security threats, deepen collaboration between the Armed Forces and state governments, and support the collective goal of building a safer and more prosperous Nigeria.
