The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has confirmed that a Nigerian, Jubril Akorede Abdulrahman, who was injured in the recent gas facility explosion in Qatar, has been discharged from hospital and is recuperating under the care of his employer.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, NiDCOM disclosed that Abdulrahman was among those affected by the explosion and fire that occurred at the Barzan Gas Supply Facility in Ras Laffan, Qatar, on Sunday, June 21, 2026.
According to the Commission, Nigeria’s Ambassador to Qatar, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, promptly intervened after learning of the incident, closely monitoring the victim’s condition and keeping the Nigerian government informed throughout the emergency.
The ambassador confirmed that the explosion occurred at about 10:30 p.m. local time at the Qatar Energy-operated facility.
Qatar Energy, during a press conference in Doha on June 22, stated that the explosion was accidental and not linked to sabotage or any hostile act. The company explained that the facility had only recently resumed operations after a planned shutdown that began in December 2025.
Emergency response teams from Qatar Energy and the Qatar Civil Defence successfully brought the fire under control.
The incident left 66 people injured, including citizens of Qatar, Nigeria, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, India and Nepal. Authorities said none of the victims sustained life-threatening injuries.
Reacting to the development, NiDCOM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, expressed relief over Abdulrahman’s recovery and discharge from hospital while sympathising with other victims still receiving treatment.
“We are glad that Jubril Abdulrahman is recovering and in safe hands. Our prayers are with him and with everyone still receiving treatment,” she said.
Dabiri-Erewa also urged Qatar Energy to continue providing comprehensive medical and welfare support to Abdulrahman and all other injured workers until they fully recover.
The Commission further commended Ambassador Yakubu for his prompt intervention and diligent monitoring of the Nigerian victim’s condition, describing his actions as a shining example of dedicated consular service and commitment to the welfare of Nigerians living abroad.
