The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, has been honoured with the Silent Hero in Management Award at the 8th Silent Heroes Awards Abuja 2026, in recognition of her exemplary leadership and contributions to the journalism profession.
Receiving the award, Comrade Ike described the recognition as both humbling and inspiring, saying it was not merely a personal achievement but a tribute to the resilience, dedication and professionalism of journalists and media practitioners who work tirelessly behind the scenes to uphold the ideals of responsible journalism.
“I receive this Silent Hero in Management Award with profound gratitude, deep humility and a strong sense of responsibility,” she said, while expressing appreciation to the organisers for finding her worthy of the honour.
According to her, the award belongs to every journalist, media professional and union member committed to strengthening the profession through hard work, integrity and selfless service.
The NUJ FCT Chairman noted that leadership is built on teamwork, sacrifice and service, stressing that the achievements recorded by the Council have been made possible through the unwavering support of members, executive officers, chapel leaders, veteran journalists and strategic partners.
She said the recognition would serve as renewed motivation to continue championing the welfare of journalists while promoting ethical and professional journalism across the country.
Emphasising the critical role of the media in nation-building, Comrade Ike described journalists as custodians of truth, defenders of democracy and advocates of accountability.
She observed that at a time when misinformation, insecurity and other societal challenges continue to test the nation’s resilience, journalists must remain committed to ethics, professionalism, fairness and the public interest.
The NUJ FCT Council Chairman reaffirmed her commitment to strengthening journalists’ welfare, promoting capacity building, encouraging ethical journalism, fostering unity within the union and creating opportunities that would enhance the professional and economic well-being of members.
She dedicated the award to journalists across Nigeria who continue to discharge their duties with courage and professionalism despite daunting challenges, while also acknowledging the support of her family, mentors, colleagues and everyone who has contributed to her leadership journey.
“This recognition is not the end of the journey; rather, it is renewed motivation to contribute even more to journalism, nation-building and humanity,” she stated.
Comrade Ike also commended the organisers of the Silent Heroes Awards for recognising individuals whose invaluable contributions often go unnoticed, describing the initiative as a commendable platform that celebrates selfless service, impactful leadership and excellence across different sectors.
