The Niger State Government has clarified comments made by the Commissioner for Homeland Security, Barrister Maurice Magaji, regarding the recent bandit attack on Pissa Community in Borgu Local Government Area, stressing that his remarks were misinterpreted by some sections of the media.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Hon. Obed Nuhu Nana, the government acknowledged that the community was attacked by armed bandits, resulting in the loss of lives and destruction of property.
The government described the incident as unfortunate and expressed condolences to the affected families and residents of the community.
According to the statement, the Commissioner for Homeland Security never intended to deny the occurrence of the attack but rather sought to reassure the public that swift intervention by security agencies had brought the situation under control and restored normalcy in the area.
The government explained that following the attack, security agencies, in collaboration with local authorities and community stakeholders, responded promptly to contain the situation, prevent further casualties and stop the spread of criminal activities to neighbouring communities.
It added that security presence has since been strengthened in the affected area, while surveillance and intelligence-driven operations are ongoing across vulnerable locations in the state.
Barrister Magaji, the statement noted, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to tackling all forms of criminality and supporting security agencies with the necessary resources and coordination to protect lives and property.
The government also urged residents to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies and rely on verified information from official sources.
Reiterating its commitment to the safety and well-being of residents, the Niger State Government assured that it would continue to take proactive measures aimed at ensuring lasting peace and security across the state.
