The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep sorrow and solidarity with the Government and people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo following a devastating Ebola outbreak that has reportedly claimed more than 130 lives and infected over 500 people.
In a statement issued on Friday by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Nigeria conveyed its heartfelt condolences to families affected by the epidemic and described the situation as a tragic public health emergency.
The government commended health authorities, frontline medical personnel, humanitarian workers, and international partners for their relentless efforts in containing the spread of the disease and caring for affected victims.
Nigeria also reaffirmed its commitment to regional and global cooperation in combating infectious diseases across Africa, stressing the need for stronger public health systems, improved disease surveillance, medical research, and emergency preparedness mechanisms on the continent.
According to the statement, the recurring outbreaks of Ebola in parts of Africa highlight the urgent need for sustained investment in healthcare infrastructure to prevent and manage future epidemics effectively.
The Federal Government further prayed for the peaceful repose of those who lost their lives, speedy recovery for infected persons, and strength for grieving families and communities in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
