The Federal Government of Nigeria has extended warm congratulations to the Government and people of Sierra Leone on the occasion of their Independence Day, commemorated annually on April 27.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, Nigeria described the anniversary as a significant milestone marking Sierra Leone’s attainment of independence in 1961, noting that it reflects the country’s resilience, unity, and enduring aspirations.
Nigeria commended Sierra Leone’s progress in consolidating democracy, sustaining peace, and pursuing national development, describing its achievements as a source of pride within the West African sub-region.
The statement also acknowledged Sierra Leone’s active role within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), particularly its contributions to regional peacebuilding, democratic governance, and sustainable development.
Highlighting the longstanding relationship between both countries, Nigeria recalled their shared history of cooperation, especially during Sierra Leone’s civil war, when the ECOWAS Monitoring Group (ECOMOG), led largely by Nigeria, played a critical role in restoring peace and constitutional order.
According to the Ministry, this shared experience has strengthened bilateral relations, which have since evolved into a robust partnership spanning trade, education, capacity building, and institutional development.
Nigeria further emphasized the importance of deepening people-to-people ties, noting that cultural connections and shared heritage continue to bind both nations and reinforce regional unity.
Reaffirming its commitment to stronger diplomatic engagement, Nigeria pledged to continue working closely with Sierra Leone to advance regional integration, security cooperation, and inclusive economic growth within West Africa.
The Federal Government concluded by wishing Sierra Leone continued peace, progress, and prosperity.
