The Nigeria Police Force has urged Nigerians to remain calm following reports of xenophobic attacks targeting Nigerians in South Africa, as well as concerns over possible reprisal attacks on South African nationals and interests within Nigeria.
In a statement issued on 30 May 2026 by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the Police noted that the situation was reviewed after a Joint Intelligence Board meeting held on 18 May 2026, chaired by the National Security Adviser. The meeting brought together key security and intelligence agencies to assess potential security implications and coordinate appropriate response measures.
The Police assured the public that there is no cause for alarm, adding that the Federal Government is engaging relevant authorities through diplomatic, intelligence, and security channels to address the situation and safeguard Nigerians both at home and abroad.
While acknowledging public concerns, the Force strongly warned against any form of reprisal attacks, violence, intimidation, destruction of property, or hate speech, stressing that such actions are illegal and would not be tolerated under Nigerian law.
It further emphasized that all individuals lawfully residing in Nigeria, regardless of nationality, are entitled to protection under the law. Consequently, any attempt to target South African nationals, diplomatic missions, businesses, or other lawful interests in Nigeria will be treated as a criminal offence.
The Police also cautioned against the spread of unverified or inflammatory content, particularly on social media, noting that misinformation could heighten tensions and disrupt ongoing diplomatic efforts.
Security agencies, according to the statement, have strengthened surveillance and deployed additional personnel around critical infrastructure, foreign missions, and other sensitive locations nationwide to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
The Force reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property, maintaining public peace, and ensuring national security, while urging citizens to remain law-abiding and continue their daily activities without fear.
DCP Anthony Okon Placid, spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force, expressed appreciation for public cooperation and reaffirmed that government institutions are actively managing the situation in the national interest.
