Nigeria and Senegal have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, enhancing economic cooperation, and deepening collaboration on regional and multilateral issues.
The commitment was made during a bilateral meeting between Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, and Senegal’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cheikh Niang, on the sidelines of the ongoing ECOWAS Mid-Year Summit in Freetown, Sierra Leone, on Friday.
During the meeting, Ambassador Enikanolaiye praised the longstanding cordial relationship between Nigeria and Senegal and expressed his determination to further deepen the brotherly ties between both countries.
He stressed the need for closer communication between the foreign ministers without unnecessary bureaucracy, noting that such engagement would promote regular consultation and stronger cooperation on bilateral and multilateral matters.
The minister also called for the revival of the Nigeria-Senegal Joint Commission to provide a structured platform for expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest. According to him, the strong political relationship between both nations should translate into increased trade, investment, and economic opportunities for their citizens.
In his response, Senegal’s Foreign Minister, Cheikh Niang, congratulated Ambassador Enikanolaiye on his appointment and commended his initiative in fostering closer collaboration between the two countries.
Niang also praised the Nigerian minister’s contributions during the ECOWAS Council of Ministers’ meeting, describing his interventions as knowledge-based and driven by expertise, qualities he said are essential for advancing regional integration and cooperation.
He welcomed Nigeria’s renewed commitment to closer engagement with Senegal, expressing confidence that the partnership would strengthen consultations and cooperation on issues of shared regional and international interest.
The meeting reflected the resolve of both countries to consolidate their longstanding friendship while exploring new opportunities for economic growth and regional development through enhanced diplomatic engagement.
